With features like 4K resolution, color night vision, and a built-in spotlight, the Arlo Ultra is the crème de la crème of security cameras. The Nest Doorbell is a series of smart video doorbells with facial recognition. It was originally slated to launch in February 2018 but was delayed until March in the United States and Canada, and was launched in the UK in May 2018. In 2021, Google announced the battery-powered Nest Doorbell, while the original Nest Hello was rebranded as the Nest Doorbell . In terms of setup and installation, the Nest Cam IQ Outdoor was mostly simple.
Nest also has a partnership with Brinks Home Security for a monthly plan so that the Nest Protect system can be professionally monitored. Several security flaws with Nest Cam products were reported in March 2017, allowing a burglar to hack the camera's always-on Bluetooth signal and stop recording. Nest released a security update later that month that fixed the vulnerabilities. On June 17, 2015, Nest launched a new version of the Nest Protect (officially termed the "second generation").

The 911 feature can connect you with the call center closest to the home address you provide during setup. Works with Nest was a program that allowed third party devices to communicate with Nest products, such as virtual assistants, along with many third-party home automation platforms. Additionally, many smart device manufacturers have direct integration with the Nest platform, including Whirlpool and GE Appliances. Nest Secure is a home security system announced in September 2017. The system consists of Nest Guard , Nest Detect (a door/window and motion sensor), and Nest Tag .
If it’s too much for your internet speeds or data package, you can lower the resolution through the Nest app. The Nest Cam Outdoor is pretty easy to operate through the Google Nest app. The app lets you adjust alerts and settings, so you don’t have to sift through 50 million alerts about waving tree branches or passing cars every day. Some cameras give you activity zones in blocks, and you can select which ones are active. It’s imprecise, and you might get more alerts than you want for one area but not enough for another.

440,000 existing Nest Protect units were recalled because of this problem on May 21, 2014, and a software update was distributed to disable this functionality. Nest's decision to brick the hubs, and its "acerbic" corporate culture, faced substantial criticism from within Google/Alphabet and in press coverage. Many of Nest's staffers came from Dropcam and Revolv, and by November 2015, about 70 of about 1000 staffers had quit, causing management concern. Some countermeasures had been taken in takeover deals, to financially discourage senior people from leaving before set dates. Of the ~100 Dropcam staffers, about half had left by March 2016, when former Dropcam CEO Greg Duffy wrote a post openly regretting selling his company to Nest. He stated that about 500 people had left (of a 1200-person staff).
In 2021, Google announced the second-generation Nest Cam Indoor, which is either battery-powered or wired. Users can control Nest without a touch screen or other input devices. As the thermostat is connected to the Internet, the company can push updates to fix bugs, improve performance and add additional features.

As far as outdoor security cameras go, the Google Nest Cam Outdoor is one of the best. It has just about everything you could possibly want or need in an outdoor camera, including HD video, two-way audio, night vision, familiar face detection, and a 24/7 recording option. You also need to think about how you want to install your camera. You can't set the IQ Outdoor on a picnic table on your back deck railing and call it a day -- it doesn't have a typical camera base.
In the larger screen, you're seeing Supersight at work, zooming in on him as he's walking around the IQ Outdoor. But in the regularly zoomed screen in the bottom left corner, I could still clearly make out that it was Chris and what he was doing. The IQ Outdoor also works seamlessly with Alexa and Google Assistant. The Nest Cam IQ Outdoor is expensive, but it might be worth it if you want a durable, weatherproof camera with facial recognition. That will replace the Nest Cam reviewed here in late 2021.

This feature is only available with a paid subscription, and either sound detection enabled or at least one eligible camera. This feature is dependent upon network connectivity and other factors, and may not be available in all areas. Wireless devices may not be reliable for emergency communications.
You won’t have to spend a couple hours just trying to figure out where everything is—it’s pretty simple. The Google Nest app is easy to use and lets you customize the Nest Cam Outdoor’s settings. That said, the Google Nest Cam Outdoor is a bit of an older model, so you’ll pay less than you would for the Nest Cam Outdoor IQ . If you still want a high-quality Google Nest camera, but looking to save some money, the Nest Cam Outdoor is a good option. Nest lets you draw custom activity zones, so you can adjust exactly which areas you want to get alerts about. You can even color code and label the zones, so you get specific alerts about each one.
As with other Nest products, you download the Nest app and create an account, or sign in with your existing one, and follow the detailed step-by-step tutorial. Be sure to test the quality of your Wi-Fi network wherever you plan to install your camera, because you don't want to drill holes in your wall only to realize that you need to invest in a Wi-Fi extender. Nest Cam IQ was announced in June 2017 and is a more premium model of their Nest Cam Indoor. It also comes with the ability to recognize and distinguish between different faces when using the Nest Aware service. For $349, I expect Nest to offer more free features -- perhaps both the person alerts andthe facial recognition database.

But we think it’s safer and more secure if you screw it in place. It would be a shame if your camera slid off and fell on your concrete patio. If you don't because the IQ Outdoor isn't worth it for the 4K and Supersight features alone.
